WordPress Security Briefing!

WordPress sites are awesome, wonderful things.  But sometimes, we are vulnerable to a “Brute Force Attack”.  This is where a computer program forces it’s way into your site by trying all possible login/password combos.  You need a Plug In (Program) that will limit login attempts to about 3.

Why do they do that?  Well, sometimes people we meet on the internet are not nice.  They may try to hijack your site to host their game, porn site or infect your visitors with malware.  They may try to slip other software into your computer and network to steal credit card information, customer data or any number of things you may have on your computer/website or other electronic device.

This link takes you to an informational site published by WordPress.  It is a great resource for anyone who wants to learn more about their WP site and how it works and how they can make it better.

Protect YOUR SITE NOW by:

  1. Log into your website.
  2. Go to the Users link on the left.
  3. Make sure you know and trust everyone on that list.
  4. Select your own User account and update your password.
  5. The best ones are the ones generated by the site it’s self.
  6. Write it down or take a picture of the screen.  You wont be able to remember this password!
  7. Next navigate to the left side of the screen again.  Select Plugins.
  8. In the search area, type in one of the security Plugins you read about in the link above.
  9. You should be able to do a “One Click Install” of your choice.
  10. Activate it and if you do nothing else, make sure it will limit your login attempts.
  11. Just to try my hand at them, I am using several of them on different sites.  I will let you know which one seems best.
